Coders of Colour vs the Digital Divide — Laptop Drive for Christmas 2020
2020 has been one hell of a year. As an organisation that used to run all of our events and outreach in person, we’ve had to make a lot of changes to adapt to the new world we are living in. Unfortunately, this meant that at the drop of a hat, we were unable to reach the 20–25% of young people that came to our events without a laptop.
Laptops went from a ‘nice to have’ to being essential for school, work and social life in a matter of weeks. Due to the fast pace, the digital divide deepened and young people, along with their families were being denied access to education and social connections. With the pandemic continuing without a clear end in sight, we want to help bridge that digital divide this Christmas.
We want to provide young people with laptops and families with broadband for a whole year.
Any companies with spare laptops are welcome to get in touch with us via this form with details about the spare laptops they have. Laptops will then be wiped of personal data and disinfected, then posted out to young people in need.
If you or anyone you know is in need of a laptop or broadband, reach out to us here.
If you want to donate to the cause, we have a Crowdfunder page for broadband and delivery of laptops.
We are aiming to get laptops to young people well before Christmas and depending on how much we raise, get families broadband in time for Christmas.
If you are a broadband provider, delivery service or someone providing a service that can make this drive easier, please get in touch with us via this form.
